STOP THE EVICTION OF ESTHER AND NELLIE - SHERIFF GO HOME: ANTI-EVICTION ACTION.
FRIDAY MAY 23, 8am-10am at 2/12 Universal St, Eastlakes
Two long term Eastlakes pensioner residents - Esther and Nellie, aged 73 are being evicted this morning at 9am by the sheriff's office.
Group have combined to stop the evictions: Action for Public Housing, Sydney University Student Representative Council, Hands Off Glebe, Community Union Defence League are attending the home to tell the Sheriff to go home.
The two women have nowhere to go, after living there for 21 years and will be homeless. Their locks will be changed with their possessions left inside and escorted off the premises.
The women pay $750 for a two bedroom apartment, have paid the rent without fail for 21 years and have paid up until June.
The case has been through NCAT (Rental Tribunal) and it's a grandfathered sheriff's action. The landlord took the case through NCAT and court before new rental rights laws were introduced. So, a case where the less stringent rental rights existed. But end of the line for legal recourse.
The landlord used the excuse that they’re “putting their kids in the apartment.''
We are in a housing crisis and this is the upshot. Help stop an eviction.
We are demanding the Housing Minister Rose Jackson intervene to stop the Sheriff evicting Esther and Nellie. They should remain in their home. We demand the government start solving the homelessness crisis by capping the rents and deliver renters, genuine rights.
The housing crisis is because governments have turned homes into the market. They are for profit, not people. This needs to stop. Esther and Nellie could be homeless as a result.
We want the government to fill empty public housing places (280 or so dwellings in Sydney region alone) with desperate people like this, end the demolition plans for public housing in Mascot, Maroubra, Waterloo, Glebe, Kingsford and South Eveleigh. We want them to repair, beautify and build public housing en masse so people like Esther and Nellie have places to land.
