The Minns Government is set to demolish yet another public housing estate -- this time at Explorer St in South Eveleigh. Like 82 Wentworth Park Road, these 46 public homes are only 30 to 35 years old, yet will be demolished to make way for an unspecified number of private and 'social' homes several years from now.
This is the approach that saw the public housing stock and waiting list go nowhere in NSW over the last two decades. We need an alternative.
At Tuesday's forum, we'll hear about several alternative approaches that keep communities intact and upgrade public housing without demolition and displacement.
Speakers incude:
OFFICE Architects, on their RETAIN/REPAIR/REINVEST model based on proposals for the Barak Beacon and Ascot Vale estates
Hands Off Glebe, the Glebe Society and architect Hector Abrahams, on their proposals for refurbishing Glebe's Franklyn St and Wentworth Park Road estates
Dr Hannes Frykholm from USYD School of Architecture, Design & Planning, on international examples of public housing renovation and refurbishment
Come along to this free and catered public forum, either in-person or on Zoom. And share the event via email and on Facebook or Instagram.
