MEDIA RELEASE : EVICTION ORDERS FOR WATERLOO SOUTH RESIDENTS FACES RESISTANCE
Press Conference outside Waterloo South Neighbourhood Centre, Saturday March 1, 12 noon
Action for Public Housing and Community Dignity Respect Media Release: 28/2/2025
On Thursday 27th February, 150 public housing residents in Waterloo South public housing estate were given eviction notices via a letter from Homes NSW. They were told their homes were in Stage 1 of the redevelopment plan, given 6 months before ‘relocation’/ eviction and as ‘moving can be stressful’, offered a relocation officer to ‘help.’
Evicting people from their communities and homes in a housing crisis unprecedented in modern times, is an appalling act of cruelty.
Karyn Brown, resident of Waterloo South public housing estate and Action for Public Housing spokesperson said, “Waterloo South is our home and we don’t want our community to be destroyed by government's hellbent on privatizing housing and land. Our communities are not for sale. We are in a housing and environment crisis. The last thing the government should be doing is evicting us, putting us in another home someone else could be living in, then demolishing perfectly livable homes when we need to save and salvage finite resources.”
Burcak Gurun, Community Dignity Respect spokesperson said “I have organised free BBQs for the residents in Waterloo for almost five years. They need peace and quiet, not evictions and demolition of their homes. You have a cost-of-living and housing crisis, billions of dollars being thrown at this housing crisis and yet, still, the state and federal ALP governments want to destroy this community? Enough is enough!
Karyn Brown, continued, “This proposed demolition shows the government only cares about developer greed and privatizing public lands, not about solving the housing crisis. There are 63,000 people on the waiting list for public housing in NSW. You demolish public housing and it takes 10 years to build something in its wake. We have a material and construction labor shortage. This is complete madness. Construction, not destruction, delivers housing!” Brown concluded.
She noted, “my neighbours and I are going to resist this tooth and nail. Join us for a press conference on Saturday.”
